A 100-year-old visually impaired man, abandoned by his family on a desolate road in Tangail, has been rescued by local police following the immediate intervention of State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku. The Minister has since pledged to bear all expenses for the elderly man's care.
The victim, Mofiz Uddin, is a resident of the Enayetpur area of Tangail city. A widower for eight years, he has three sons and three daughters. According to locals, after one son passed away and another was paralyzed, Mofiz Uddin transferred his remaining property to his sons. He had recently been living with his paralyzed elder son's daughter.
However, on Thursday (July 2) evening, his granddaughter and her husband allegedly left him on the side of the road in the Bailya area, approximately three kilometers from their home.
Upon learning of the incident, State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku instructed the Tangail Sadar Police Station to take immediate action. Police rescued the helpless man late that night and detained his granddaughter. Her husband managed to flee the scene.
Initially, Mofiz Uddin's younger daughter, Rina Begum, expressed hesitation about taking in her father. Following a personal conversation with the State Minister, who assured her of full support, she agreed to take over his care. Police safely transported Mofiz Uddin to Rina's home that same night.
Going beyond the rescue, State Minister Tuku announced he would personally cover Mofiz Uddin's medical, food, and accommodation expenses. He also directed the relevant departments to expedite a government old-age allowance for him. Should any issues arise at his daughter’s home, the Minister promised to rent a separate, safe room for him and cover those costs.
Tangail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin confirmed the rescue. "Immediately after receiving the State Minister's order, police rushed to the spot and rescued the elderly man. He is currently safe in the custody of his younger daughter. The granddaughter has been detained, and we are pursuing her husband, who fled sensing police presence," the OC stated.
Condemning the incident, State Minister Tuku said, "Abandoning a helpless old man on the street is deeply inhumane. Parents are our greatest blessing, and neglecting them is unacceptable. I will take responsibility for his treatment and basic needs for as long as necessary. Simultaneously, strict legal action will be taken against those who abandoned him."
