Russian drones struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova overnight, killing and injuring civilians as the Ukraine's border guard service said Wednesday.

The attack hit the Starokozache international crossing in Odesa Oblast on the border with Moldova. According to a Facebook post from border guards Russian drones struck the crossing's infrastructure and nearby areas with sparking fires. Civilians near the checkpoint were among the casualties.

The crossing has been temporarily closed with halting the processing of people and vehicles. Ukrainian authorities said Moldova has been informed of the situation.

Separately, Russian forces also attacked Kyiv overnight. Ukraine's emergency service reported fires in the capital but said no casualties occurred according to a Telegram post.

The strikes are part of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine which continues to affect civilian infrastructure and border regions. Attacks near international crossings raise added concern as they can disrupt humanitarian movement and regional stability, particularly for neighboring countries like Moldova that are not directly involved in the conflict.

Authorities have not yet released the exact number of casualties from the border crossing attack. Ukrainian officials continue to document damage from Russian strikes as the war persists with border regions increasingly affected in recent attacks.

The incident adds to a growing list of strikes on infrastructure far from the front lines are underscoring the war's continued impact on areas near Ukraine's western borders. Moldova, a non-NATO neighbor has repeatedly expressed concern over spillover effects from the conflict including drone debris and airspace violations in the past.

Further updates are expected as Ukrainian authorities assess the damage and casualties from the overnight strikes.
