


Russian ballistic missiles killed 12 people and injured more than 30 in Kyiv early Thursday damaging buildings and cutting power across parts of the Ukrainian capital authorities said.
A fire destroyed the upper floors of a nine-storey residential building in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district killing seven the Mayor Vitali Klitschko said also declaring Friday a day of mourning. Two other districts also suffered damage with strikes hitting warehouses, a school and a children's hospital. Power company DTEK said electricity had been restored to more than half of the roughly 90,000 homes left without power.
Russia has intensified air attacks on Ukraine in recent months with exploiting Kyiv's shortage of interceptor missiles. The Russian defence ministry said it struck facilities producing drone components with a military depot and a logistics hub near Kyiv. A Reuters witness reported hearing more than a dozen explosions and another person was killed in the surrounding region.
Ukraine has responded with intensified strikes on Russian oil facilities and logistics infrastructure. Diplomatic efforts have yet to produce a lasting ceasefire since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Separately, a drone crashed into Romania a NATO and EU member during the attack, Romanian authorities said while another drone crossed into Moldovan airspace.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine has submitted war-ending proposals to U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and has repeatedly requested more interceptor missiles.
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow had not received specific proposals for new talks but would be ready to meet on short notice. Witkoff and Kushner last visited Moscow in January and have not yet traveled to Kyiv.
