The Bangladesh government has approved the direct purchase of 14 liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes without a tender process as dwindling stockpiles and supply shortages deepen the national energy crisis.
The policy approval was granted Wednesday during a Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs meeting chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
Officials said the decision allows the government to bypass open bidding under emergency provisions to maintain steady domestic gas supplies in the public interest. Shrinking reserves at floating LNG terminals have put significant strain on the country's power grid and industrial sectors in recent weeks.
The emergency procurement aims to prevent further disruption to home and commercial gas distribution while stabilizing the national energy grid.
