The government has moved to procure six additional spot Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargoes for October delivery after contracted suppliers halted shipments due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
State-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) a subsidiary of Petrobangla has floated tenders for delivery across six specific October windows: October 8-9, 11-12, 15-16, 24-25, 27-28 and 30-31. The bid submission deadline is set for 10:40 AM on September 9. This marks the highest number of spot LNG cargoes Bangladesh has ever sought through a single notice.
Each cargo will carry a volume of approximately 3.36 million MMBTus. Deliveries are scheduled for Moheshkhali Island where the country’s two operational Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) will handle discharge. Bangladesh previously secured two spot cargoes for early October delivery.
The emergency procurement comes as Bangladesh struggles to bridge a massive deficit between supply and demand. Petrobangla data shows total natural gas supply stood at 2,333 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) including 703 mmcfd of regasified LNG against an estimated national demand of 4,000 mmcfd. To manage the ongoing shortage Petrobangla has resorted to rationing gas supplies across power plants, industrial units and other consumers.
