The price of a 12 kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder at the consumer level has been increased by Tk 223. The new fixed price is Tk 2,060. Earlier, the price of this cylinder was Tk 1,837.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) issued a notification announcing the new prices on Monday (November 2) evening. The new prices will be effective from 8pm on Monday.
BERC said the price adjustment was due to the increase in LPG prices in the international market and the increase in commissions for importers, dealers and retailers.
At the same time, the price of autogas used in vehicles has also been increased. The price of autogas per liter has been increased from 84 taka 62 paisa to 91 taka 95 paisa. Last September, the price of autogas per liter was 73 taka 9 paisa.
BERC has also increased the commissions and charges at various stages of LPG sales. According to the new decision, importers' storage and bottling charges—including transportation costs from the operator's plant to the distributor—have been increased from Tk 200 to Tk 281.76 per 12 kg cylinder. Dealers' charges have been increased from Tk 50 to Tk 85, and retailers' commissions have been increased from Tk 45 to Tk 70.
However, there have already been complaints about the availability of LPG in the market at the BERC-set price. Although the price of a 12-kg cylinder was increased by Tk 252 last October to Tk 1,837, it is reported that it is being sold for Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,300 in different areas of the capital.
The LPG market started to become unstable from the third week of September. In the context of rising prices in the international market, importers reduced supply, creating a crisis in the market. At that time, cylinders priced at Tk 1,585 were sold at Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,500 somewhere.
