Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) has discovered gas in a new exploration well in Companyganj upazila of Noakhali, with an estimated reserve of 97.69 billion cubic feet (Bcf) across two zones.
The discovery was confirmed on Monday, November 2, through a gas flare at the Sundalpur South-1 exploration well in Rampur Union of the upazila.
The well has the potential to supply 15 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid, according to Bapex.
The well was drilled with funding from the government and Bapex's own resources. Drilling began on July 8 using Bapex's Vijoy-10 rig. After reaching a depth of approximately 3,289 metres, gas was found in two zones of the well, sources at the company said.
Plans are in place to extract gas from the well over the next 20 years. The estimated consumer-level value of the gas is Tk 5,809 crore.
Mohammad Rakibul Hasan, project director of the Sundalpur South-1 exploration well, confirmed the discovery.
He said the well would be monitored and subjected to drill stem testing (DST) over the next 15 days to determine whether oil or any other substances were also present.
