Vice-Chancellor of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) Professor Dr Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain has said the university is planting more saplings than the number of trees removed or relocated to facilitate campus development projects, as part of efforts to protect the environment.
He made the remarks while planting rubber, litchi and star fruit saplings on the premises of Kabi Nazrul University School and College on Tuesday (November 3), under the university's greening project.
"Some trees had to be relocated to other places and some removed to facilitate the university's development work. However, to protect the university's environment, we are systematically planting a greater number of saplings," the vice-chancellor said during the programme.
The plantation programme was organised on the university campus with support from Pubali Bank PLC. Saplings of various fruit-bearing, timber and flowering species were planted.
The species included rubber, ixora, bougainvillea, marigold, guava, custard apple, Indian gooseberry, syzygium, China Three litchi, Indian almond, golden shower and oleander, among others.
Among those present were the university's Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Emdadul Huda; Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration Professor Dr Raju Ahmed; Dean of the Faculty of Law Professor Dr Ahmed Shakil Hasmi; Acting Registrar Khandaker Nazmul Hasan; Director of the Finance and Accounts Office Professor Dr Sakhawat Hossain Sarkar; and Head of the Department of Bangla Language and Literature Professor Dr Md Habib-ul-Mawla, also known as Mawla-Prince.
