Three more children died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours leading up to 8:00 am Wednesday also pushing the country's combined confirmed and suspected measles death toll to 1,002 this year according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest deaths were classified as suspected measles cases with raising the total number of suspected measles deaths to 902. Confirmed measles deaths remained unchanged at 100.
During the same 24-hour period 1,119 new suspected measles cases were reported also bringing the cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide to 167,580. Additionally 69 new laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded and raising the total number of confirmed infections to 19,904.
Since the outbreak began on March 15 this year a total of 147,393 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalized across the country. Of these 141,819 have recovered and been discharged according to DGHS figures.
The rising death toll highlights the continuing severity of Bangladesh's measles outbreak which has placed significant pressure on the country's healthcare system throughout the year. Health officials continue to urge parents to ensure their children receive timely measles vaccinations as the disease remains highly contagious and can lead to serious complications, particularly among unvaccinated children.
The DGHS has been monitoring the situation closely, with daily updates on confirmed and suspected cases across hospitals nationwide. Authorities have previously stressed the importance of early detection and treatment to reduce fatalities, especially in areas with lower vaccination coverage.
As case numbers continue to climb, health experts warn that sustained public health campaigns and improved vaccine access will be critical to controlling the outbreak and preventing further child deaths in the coming months.
