Bidisha Siddiqui, the ex-wife of late former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad was released from Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail on bail on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Jail Superintendent Nazrul Islam confirmed she was freed at 5:12 PM after prison authorities verified her legal documents. The High Court had granted her bail earlier on September 6.

Bidisha was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment in a fraud case on May 20. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam also fined her Tk.10,000 with an additional month in jail for default. Because she was absent during the verdict, the court issued an arrest warrant also leading to her apprehension in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on August 25. The following day a lower court rejected her initial bail application and sent her to prison.

The legal dispute dates back to February 7, 2008. Mosharraf Hossain a businessman from Mirpur filed the lawsuit at Gulshan Police Station with accusing Bidisha of fraud and embezzlement. The case stemmed from a 2001 agreement regarding the sale of an Tk.8 million flat in Baridhara's President Park.
