With Eid-ul-Azha just around the corner, spice prices have skyrocketed across retail markets in Paikgachha and greater Khulna, stretching the budgets of low- and middle-income consumers.
A sharp price hike across almost all essential spices has left ordinary buyers struggling. Currently, cardamom is retailing at Tk 4,600 to Tk 5,500 per kg. Cloves are selling for Tk 1,800 to Tk 2,000, cumin at Tk 700 to Tk 800, cinnamon at Tk 550 to Tk 600, and coriander powder has crossed Tk 300 per kg. The prices of daily staples like ginger, garlic, onions, and edible oil are also on an upward trend.
While wholesalers claim imports and supplies are entirely normal, retail prices continue to surge. Traders attribute the volatility to a sudden spike in seasonal demand ahead of the festival. However, buyers express frustration as retail shops remain fully stocked despite the inflated price tags. Beyond spices, festive essentials like polao rice, salad ingredients, and dry foods are also experiencing severe upward price pressure, compounding the hurdles for everyday shoppers before the holiday.
