As Eid-ul-Adha approaches, demand for the traditional spice Chuijhal has increased sharply in Paikgachha of Khulna, pushing prices higher in local markets.
Chuijhal is widely used in the southwestern districts of Bangladesh, especially in Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, and Jashore, to enhance the flavor and aroma of meat dishes. Beef, mutton, biryani, and roasted meat cooked with Chuijhal are especially popular during Eid.
Traders said demand for the spice rises every year before Eid, but limited supply in the market has caused prices to climb further this season. Depending on quality and size, Chuijhal is now selling between Tk 800 and Tk 1,500 per kilogram in retail markets. During normal times, prices usually range from Tk 400 to Tk 1,000 per kilogram.
In the Khulna region, the stems and roots of Chuijhal are cut into small pieces and used as a spice while cooking meat. The roots are considered more flavorful and pungent than the stems, making them more popular among consumers.
Seasonal traders have also set up temporary Chuijhal stalls in different markets of Paikgachha ahead of Eid. Crowds of buyers are increasing daily as many consumers fear prices may rise further before Qurbani.
Rafiqul Islam, a Chuijhal seller at Gadaipur Market, said sales increase significantly during Eid-ul-Adha every year. “Wholesale prices have gone up, so we are also forced to sell at higher rates,” he said.
Another trader, Mir Kajal from Notun Bazar, said Chuijhal remains one of the most sought-after spices for meat and biryani during Eid.
Seller Shahidul Islam said smaller Chuijhal used to sell for Tk 400 to Tk 600 per kilogram, while larger varieties were around Tk 800. “Now, depending on quality and size, prices have reached Tk 800 to Tk 1,500,” he added.
Buyers say Chuijhal has become an essential part of Eid cooking traditions in the region.
Shafiqul Islam, a customer, said he occasionally eats meat cooked with Chuijhal throughout the year, but during Qurbani Eid it feels incomplete without it.
Another buyer, Abdul Karim, said he purchased Chuijhal early to avoid higher prices and heavy crowds before Eid. “Meat cooked with Chuijhal has a unique taste that guests enjoy during Eid,” he said.
