A one-year-old boy has died from measles at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, marking the district’s third casualty from the disease this month. Meanwhile, 14 new patients were admitted with symptoms over the last 24 hours, raising the number of current hospitalizations to 47.
The deceased child was identified as Md. Abdullah, son of Jhorana Akhter, from the Safipur area of Kaliakoir Upazila. Hospital Director Aminul Islam confirmed the death, which occurred at around 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 23. Two other children had previously died of measles symptoms at the same facility on May 2 and May 3.
Hospital sources report that measles cases in Gazipur have been fluctuating for several weeks, with children making up the vast majority of patients. Worshippers and residents have been flocking to local health facilities showing hallmark symptoms of the virus, including high fever, cold, cough, red eyes, and distinct red body rashes.
Data from the hospital and the Civil Surgeon’s office reveals that 204 patients have officially tested positive for measles so far. In total, 938 individuals with symptoms have been admitted across Gazipur since the uptick began; of them, 888 have recovered and returned home.
Gazipur Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Mamunur Rahman stated that health authorities have placed the entire district under special medical surveillance. He urged parents to bring children to the nearest hospital immediately if they show any early signs of the virus.
