At least 15 people were killed and 10 others injured after a truck loaded with construction rods overturned on the Dhaka-Tangail highway early Monday.
The accident occurred around 4:00 AM in the Saratail Dakshinpara area, near the east bank of the Jamuna Bridge.
According to first responders, the North Bengal-bound truck was illegally carrying passengers on top of its cargo bed. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the highway and flip into a roadside ditch. Fifteen victims were crushed under the heavy weight of the iron rods and died on the spot.
Ataur Rahman, the in-charge of Elenga Fire Station, confirmed the casualties from the scene. "The truck was carrying both goods and passengers. We have recovered 15 bodies so far," he said.
Police and fire service personnel rescued the survivors and rushed them to Tangail General Hospital, where several remain in critical condition.
Fuad, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jamuna Setu Purba Police Station, stated that authorities are currently working to identify the deceased. The vehicle has been salvaged, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
