Incidents of armed robbery and theft in the outer anchorage area of the country’s main seaport, Chittagong Port, have declined significantly due to coordinated security measures taken by the port authority, Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies.

The Chittagong Port Authority shared the information in a notification issued after reviewing the first-quarter (January–March) report of RECAAP, an organization that monitors and reports piracy and armed robbery incidents against ships across Asia.

According to the notification signed by Port Authority Secretary (Additional Responsibility) Syed Refaet Hamim, enhanced security measures have strengthened the national and international reputation of Chittagong Port.

The notification outlined several steps taken to ensure the safety of local and foreign vessels at the outer anchorage.

Every vessel at the outer anchorage must now appoint a specially trained “Port Watchman” from the Chittagong Port Security Department. These personnel remain on duty around the clock.

The port’s Executive Magistrate and Security Department are conducting regular mobile court operations. Joint patrols are also being carried out with the Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard. Authorities have ensured continuous information sharing among all security agencies to prevent incidents.

Ships at the outer anchorage are being monitored through the port’s modern Vessel Traffic Management and Information System.

Coordination With Maritime Police and Intelligence Agencies: Regular coordination and information exchange with the Maritime Police and state intelligence agencies are helping identify and prevent criminal activities.

Round-the-clock communication is being maintained among the port authority, berth operators, ship handling operators, shipping agents, C&F agents, transport owners and workers to ensure a rapid response during emergencies.

According to the Chittagong Port Authority, these coordinated measures have made the outer anchorage area safer than before. The improved security has increased confidence among international shipping companies and is contributing positively to the national economy.

The authority said strict security measures will continue to support the development of a safe and modern port system.
