After a spell of intense heat in early Boishakh, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) says Kalbaisakhi storms may continue for the next five days.

Due to rough seas, seaports in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist warning signal number 3.

In a weather bulletin issued on Wednesday (April 29), the BMD said a strong pressure gradient persists over the North Bay of Bengal, making the sea rough. Thunderclouds have formed across the country, bringing heavy rain in many areas.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been asked to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

The department warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the country today and tomorrow, with thunderstorms likely. Temporary waterlogging may occur, and low-lying areas face a risk of flooding.

There is also a risk of landslides in the hilly areas of Chittagong division.

Rain or thundershowers with gusty winds of 45–60 km/h may affect Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet regions, along with several adjoining districts. River ports in these areas have been advised to display warning signal number 1.

Over the next 96 hours, heavy (44–88 mm) to very heavy (over 88 mm) rainfall is likely in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

Light to moderate rain with lightning and gusty winds may occur in many areas, while some places may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Day temperatures are expected to remain steady, while night temperatures may fall slightly.

Earlier, the BMD warned that Kalbaisakhi storms with winds of 60–80 km/h could affect most divisions within 48 hours. Rainfall may decrease after five days, with temperatures likely to rise again.

Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during storms, stay away from open fields, trees and water bodies during lightning, and follow local administration instructions. Residents in hilly areas have been urged to remain alert.
