The U.S. State Department has announced a special edition passport to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. The move has sparked controversy, as it includes a large image of Donald Trump on the inside cover.
According to a report by The Guardian, the passport has been available since this summer as part of a limited-edition release. The design features Trump’s portrait alongside the text of the Declaration of Independence, the US flag and his signature in gold.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the passport uses “customized artwork” and “enhanced imaging.”
The passport is part of the administration’s “America 250” programme, which includes planned events such as a Grand Prix race on the National Mall and a UFC match on the White House grounds.
Critics argue that placing a political leader’s image on an official document reflects a growing personality cult. They point to similar instances, including Trump’s portrait displayed in government offices such as the Justice Department.
His image has also appeared alongside Abraham Lincoln in Department of Agriculture displays and with George Washington on the 2026 National Park Pass. The Park Service recently warned visitors against defacing passes after protests involving stickers covering Trump’s face.
There have also been proposals to feature Trump on new coin designs.
In another controversial move, preliminary approval has been granted for a 250-foot golden arch in Washington, informally called the “Arc de Trump.” If built, it would exceed the height of both the US Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. Despite limited public support, a panel of Trump allies has approved moving the project forward.
Critics view these actions as attempts to expand personal influence over national symbols. The administration, however, says the initiatives are intended to mark a historic milestone in a unique way.
