Two Luminaries Receive 'Nazrul Padak' at JKKNIU's 127th Nazrul Jayanti

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) hosted a two-day celebration to mark the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The commemorative event featured an international lecture series, cultural performances and the presentation of the prestigious 'Nazrul Padak 2026'.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions to the promotion and study of the poet's legacy, renowned researcher and poet Abdul Hai Sikder and prominent Nazrul Sangeet exponent Shabnam Mushtari were awarded the 'Nazrul Padak 2026'.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain formally presented the award to Sikder on Monday. Mushtari could not attend due to illness and university authorities confirmed her medal would be delivered later.

Inaugurating the second day of the program the Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mosharraf Hossain paid rich tribute to the National Poet. He also acknowledged the late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia for her foundational role in establishing the university.

"This university will serve as the vanguard for preserving Nazrul's memory and contributions, becoming the central hub for Nazrul research in Bangladesh" the Vice-Chancellor stated. Highlighting the university's two decades of academic and infrastructural growth, he emphasized the need for broader promotion of the poet's works, noting that Nazrul was often deprived of his due respect during his lifetime.

The event also saw the unveiling of Gahi Samyer Gaan, a special publication dedicated to Nazrul Jayanti.

A major highlight of the celebration was the international Nazrul lecture series, where eight scholarly papers were presented across four sessions. Academics, researchers and writers from various Bangladeshi universities alongside scholars from India joining virtually, explored diverse themes. Discussions covered Nazrul's political rebellion, his musical genius and the translation of his literature into Indian provincial languages.

The two-day celebration concluded with a vibrant cultural evening at the university's newly built Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) featuring recitations, dances and musical performances by students and faculty members.

The university organized this elaborate celebration in August because the poet’s actual birthday on May 25 coincided with the holy Eid-ul-Azha and summer vacations. On that day, the administration had paid tribute through a brief wreath-laying ceremony at the campus's 'Nazrul Sculpture'.
