Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Removed, New Appointment Issued

The government has removed Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud from his post and appointed Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md Mahbubur Rashid of the Special Branch (SB) as his replacement.

The Home Ministry issued a notification on Tuesday (August 25), signed by Deputy Secretary Tousif Ahmed, confirming the changes.

According to the notification:

  • DIG Md Mahbubur Rashid, currently with the Special Branch, has been appointed as Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
  • DMP Deputy Commissioner Md Aslam Uddin has been transferred to the Police Headquarters on an TR (temporary reserve) posting.
  • Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Nurul Amin of Noakhali Police Training Centre has been transferred to the Khagrachhari Armed Police Battalion and Specialized Training Centre.

The order will take effect immediately.

Mohammad Abdul Mabud had appeared at a press conference on August 23 following the killing of retired schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, his wife and two others in Rangpur. He had announced that two young men had been detained in connection with the killings.

While describing the details of the brutal quadruple murder, the police commissioner became emotional and was seen crying.
