126 Containers of Goods Left at Chattogram Port to Be Destroyed

Chattogram Customs House has initiated an environmentally responsible disposal process for 3,268 metric tonnes of goods stored in 126 containers that have been lying at Chattogram Port for a long time. The goods are considered unsuitable for auction, substandard, or expired.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) said on Tuesday (August 25) that the destruction process began at 10:00am on Monday at a designated site behind the Republic Club of Chattogram Port.

According to customs officials, the goods slated for destruction include 34 containers of substandard dates, 40 containers of expired soda ash, and 18 containers of expired feed-grade limestone. Other spoiled and perishable items, including oranges, onions and cashew nuts, are also among the goods.

To ensure security during the disposal operation, personnel from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Ansar, and the local port police were deployed at the site.

The NBR said destroying perishable and potentially harmful goods that have remained at the port for an extended period would help reduce container congestion. It is also expected to have a positive impact on overall port security and environmental protection.

The NBR further said that other non-auctionable and destructible goods remaining in the port area will be disposed of in phases. The operation will continue on an urgent basis with cooperation from the relevant agencies.
