


An unidentified man, estimated to be around 35 years old, was shot dead by two assailants in the New Market area of the capital on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred around 8:00 PM near the Battala area, in front of Dhaka University’s Shahnewaz Hostel. According to witnesses, two men wearing masks and caps arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on the victim under a banyan tree.
"The attackers fired several rounds before fleeing. Passersby attempted to chase them, but the shooters fired into the air to intimidate the crowd and escaped on their motorcycle," said Mezbah Rahman, a witness.
The victim was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) emergency department with gunshot wounds to his head, armpits, and hands. Doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Md Anwar Hossain Khan, Inspector (Investigation) of New Market Police Station, confirmed that police are currently at the scene. "We are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area and speaking with witnesses to identify the attackers. A forensic team has been called to assist with the investigation," he stated.
Md Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner (Ramna Division) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, added that efforts are underway to identify the deceased. The body is currently being held at the DMCH morgue for an autopsy.
