Residents of Kurigram formed a human chain demanding a halt to sand mining and the construction of a new dam to prevent erosion of the Dharla River.

The programme was held on Friday afternoon on the riverbank at Char Baraibari in Bhogdanga Union under Kurigram Sadar.

Local representatives, political activists and community members took part in the demonstration. Among the speakers were UP member Abdul Alim, BNP leader Abdul Gani Mia and local organiser Amir Hossain.

Speakers expressed concern that ongoing sand extraction is worsening river erosion, putting homes and farmland at risk. They called on authorities to stop sand mining in the area and take effective measures to protect the riverbank.

Amir Hossain said residents are trying to use excavated sand to protect their land but stressed the need for coordinated government action.

Abdul Alim urged the administration to reconsider any plans related to sand leasing in the public interest. Abdul Gani Mia called for cancellation of tenders for sand extraction.

Participants demanded immediate steps, including construction of a protective dam, to safeguard lives and property along the Dharla River.
