


Eminent social worker Kanan Bala Thakur has passed away in Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj, leaving the community in mourning.
She died on Thursday (March 26) at 2:56 pm at the age of 76, according to family members. She had been suffering from age-related health complications.
Kanan Bala Thakur was the wife of late Kartik Chandra Thakur, a former central executive member of the BNP, and the mother of local BNP leader Rana Thakur. She was a resident of Tikardanga village under Ujani Union.
Born on August 11, 1950, in Achar Para of Gohala Union, she became known for her compassion and dedication to social work from an early age. Throughout her life, she worked quietly to support poor and vulnerable people in her area.
Though she remained out of the public spotlight, she played an important supportive role in her husband’s political life and earned respect for her humanitarian contributions.
Locals remember her as a simple, religious, and kind-hearted person who stood by people in times of need.
She is survived by one son, seven daughters, and many relatives and well-wishers.
Md. Selimuzzaman Selim, Member of Parliament for Gopalganj-1 and Joint Organising Secretary of BNP’s National Executive Committee, expressed deep sorrow at her death. In a condolence message, he prayed for the peace of her soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Local political, social, and cultural figures also paid tribute, recalling her contributions to the community. Residents said her death is an irreparable loss, and her work will continue to inspire others.
