UN Secretary-General António Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ strong support and solidarity with Bangladesh during a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman at the UN Headquarters on Thursday.
Guterres extended warm congratulations to Bangladesh’s newly formed government and commended the country for its continued humanitarian leadership, particularly in sheltering forcibly displaced Rohingya people.
The discussion also covered global challenges, including the ongoing oil crisis and its disproportionate impact on developing and vulnerable nations. Both sides expressed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and the UN in tackling global issues and promoting sustainable development goals.
Dr Rahman highlighted the severe effects of the energy crisis on poorer nations and, on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, formally invited the UN Secretary-General to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time. Guterres welcomed the invitation and expressed his appreciation.
This meeting reinforces Bangladesh’s role as a humanitarian leader in the region and strengthens its partnership with the UN on global development and crisis response initiatives.
