Three liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers are scheduled to arrive at Chittagong port within a week, bringing a total of around 1.93 lakh tons of LNG.
One tanker has already reached Bangladesh’s waters, while the remaining two are expected by Wednesday.
The ‘HL Puffin’ tanker, carrying 61,999 tons of LNG from Australia, reached the coast of Qutubdia on Thursday. The other two tankers—‘Selius Galpagos’ with 61,000 tons from Indonesia and ‘New Brave’ with approximately 70,000 tons from the United States—are on schedule to dock at the port by Wednesday.
Nurul Alam, senior deputy general manager of Uni Global Business Limited, the local representative for the two tankers, confirmed the shipments are expected to arrive on time.
Currently, about 70% of Bangladesh’s LNG imports come from Qatar. However, recent uncertainty due to the Middle East conflict caused delays. Two tankers meant to arrive in mid-March from Qatar are yet to reach, with one still loaded at Ras Laffan port. So far, seven LNG tankers have reached Bangladesh this month, and typically 10–11 tankers arrive monthly.
Petrobangla manages LNG imports, and officials are arranging supplies from alternative sources to prevent any major shortage, despite tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
