Another shipment of 62,150 metric tons of wheat from the United States has arrived at Chattogram Port to support Bangladesh’s food supply.
According to a Food Ministry press release issued on Friday, the consignment was imported under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement between Bangladesh and the United States. The vessel, MV Ubon Naree, has reached the outer anchorage of the port.
Earlier, 58,457 metric tons of wheat arrived under the same agreement. Import activities under this deal are ongoing.
Authorities have started testing wheat samples from the latest shipment. Once testing is completed, unloading will begin. Of the total consignment, 37,290 metric tons will be unloaded at Chattogram Port, while the remaining 24,860 metric tons will be sent to Mongla Port.
The government has stepped up wheat imports from the United States under multiple G2G agreements. Previously, 237,845 metric tons were imported under G2G-1 and 230,039 metric tons under G2G-2, bringing the combined total to 467,884 metric tons.
Bangladesh’s annual wheat demand is about 7 million metric tons, while domestic production is around 1 million metric tons. The gap is met through imports by both the government and private sector.
Officials say wheat imports from international sources, including the United States, will continue to ensure food security.
