Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Friday stressed that Ziaur Rahman was a key figure in Bangladesh’s Liberation War, criticising past efforts to downplay his contribution.
Speaking at a discussion marking Independence Day of Bangladesh at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium, he said attempts to deny Zia’s role ultimately prove his importance in the country’s independence.
The event was organised by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and chaired by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Tarique Rahman said Ziaur Rahman’s role in proclaiming independence was not sudden but rooted in a long-held vision. He referred to Zia’s article “Birth of a Nation”, published on March 26, 1972, claiming it reflects his thoughts and actions during the early hours of independence.
He argued that the article’s authenticity was never challenged when it was first published or republished in 1974, as many freedom fighters were alive at the time. According to him, later attempts to question Zia’s role were politically motivated.
Paying tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War, Tarique Rahman also acknowledged the contributions of freedom fighters and the general public. He described the war as the most significant chapter in Bangladesh’s history and said research and discussion on it should continue, but without distorting facts.
He warned against both ignoring history and over-focusing on it, noting that balance is essential for future progress.
Referring to global struggles, including that of Palestinians, he said only those who fight for freedom truly understand its value. He added that Bangladesh achieved independence through immense sacrifice and must uphold those ideals.
Prime Minister said the aspirations of people remain high despite limited resources, expressing confidence that unity and collective effort can build a self-reliant and democratic Bangladesh.
He highlighted government initiatives such as social safety programmes, agricultural support and employment generation, aimed at improving living standards.
Other speakers at the event included senior BNP leaders, academics and policymakers, who also discussed the significance of independence and national unity.
