A severe gas shortage has disrupted the transport system in Monohardi, Narsingdi, with hundreds of gas-powered vehicles forming long queues every day at the upazila’s only Anwar & CNG Filling Station.
Due to inadequate gas supply, drivers are reportedly being forced to wait for hours without receiving enough fuel. The situation is disrupting passenger transportation and normal traffic movement across Monohardi and nearby areas.
Drivers allege that even after waiting in line for a long time, many vehicles receive only Tk 50 to Tk 100 worth of gas. In some cases, drivers manage to obtain gas worth Tk 100 to Tk 200.
Because of the limited supply, drivers often have to return to the station repeatedly to refuel. They say this is costing them valuable working hours and significantly reducing their daily income.
CNG-powered auto-rickshaws, microbuses, private cars and other vehicles are among the worst affected.
Several drivers also claimed that they have been forced to drop passengers before reaching their destinations because of insufficient fuel.
The shortage is creating particular difficulties for office workers, students, patients and other commuters who depend on public and private transport.
The disruption has reportedly become more noticeable on the Dhaka–Kishoreganj and Mathkhola routes, where the shortage of gas-powered vehicles is adding to commuters’ suffering.
One group of drivers said they have to spend several hours every day standing in line for gas. According to them, running a vehicle with such a small amount of fuel is not economically viable, while household expenses continue to rise.
According to local residents, the current crisis is linked to several factors, including a mechanical problem at a floating LNG terminal in Moheshkhali, declining production from several gas fields and limitations in the existing gas distribution system.
The effects of the broader gas supply shortage have reportedly reached Monohardi and surrounding areas.
Locals fear that the situation could deteriorate further if gas supplies are not restored soon. Prolonged shortages could cause serious disruption to passenger transportation on both regional and longer-distance routes.
Drivers and commuters have therefore urged the relevant authorities to take immediate and effective measures to restore a stable gas supply and reduce the suffering of transport workers and passengers.
