Police recovered the hanging bodies of a 20-year-old homemaker and a 14-year-old boy in two separate incidents in Kalukhali upazila of Rajbari on Monday (August 17).
The incidents occurred in Boalia and Ratandia unions, according to local sources and police.
The deceased were identified as Mim Khatun, 20, wife of Pannu Kazi of Bhabanipur village in Boalia Union, and Md. Ratul, 14, son of Md. Hanif of Rupsa village in Ratandia Union.
According to locals, Mim had asked her husband for some money for personal expenses on Monday morning. A disagreement reportedly followed after her husband said he could not provide the money.
Pannu later left home for work.
At around 1:30pm, Mim’s mother-in-law, Zorina Begum, went to call her for the Zuhr prayer and found the door of the room locked. After receiving no response despite repeatedly calling and knocking, she raised an alarm.
Relatives subsequently opened the door and found Mim hanging from a bamboo beam with a scarf.
Police from Kalukhali Police Station arrived at the scene, recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Rajbari Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
In a separate incident, the hanging body of Ratul, 14, was recovered from Rupsa village in Ratandia Union on Monday afternoon.
Local sources said Ratul lost his mother when he was only seven months old. His father later remarried, and Ratul was subsequently raised at his maternal grandmother Nazma Begum’s home.
Family members said Ratul had lived with an intellectual disability since childhood.
At around 10am, Ratul reportedly asked his grandmother for Tk 500. She told him to ask his maternal uncle for the money. Ratul then went to his bedroom without saying anything further.
At approximately 3:30pm, Nazma Begum entered the room and found him hanging from a ceiling fan with an old scarf.
Hearing her cries, neighbours came to the scene and informed police.
Police later recovered the body and sent it to Rajbari Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Kalukhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafa Kamal said police initially suspect suicide in both incidents, but the exact causes of death will be determined after the autopsy reports are received.
He also said that no written complaints had been filed in either case so far and that legal action would be taken if any complaint is submitted.
Note: The reported circumstances are preliminary police/local-source accounts. The cause and manner of death should not be considered conclusively established until the relevant investigation and medical examination are completed.
