DHAKA — The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered an immediate suspension of all Indian Premier League (IPL) broadcasts in Bangladesh following the controversial removal of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In a letter issued today (Jan. 5), the ministry instructed broadcasters to cease all telecasts of the league and related programming until further notice. The move follows a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to remove Mustafizur from the KKR squad—a decision the ministry says was made without "reasonable explanation." "The decision has deeply hurt and angered the people of Bangladesh," the ministry stated. T20 World Cup Boycott The sporting divide deepened yesterday as Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul announced that Bangladesh will not travel to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Nazrul characterized the boycott as a necessary response to "radical communal policies" within Indian cricket administration. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially petitioned the International Cricket Council (ICC) to move its matches from India to Sri Lanka. "If India cannot provide security for one player, how can they ensure the safety of our entire team?" BCB Director Khaled Mashud Pilot told The Business Standard. Background on the Controversy Mustafizur was originally signed by KKR for Rs9.2 crore (approx. $1.1 million) after a high-stakes bidding war last month. However, the signing sparked backlash from some political and religious groups in India, putting pressure on franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan. On Jan. 3, KKR confirmed Mustafizur's release, citing instructions from the BCCI. The T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is set to begin Feb. 7. Bangladesh was scheduled to open its campaign against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. While the tournament schedule remains in flux, Bangladesh officials remain firm that the team will not cross the border under current conditions.
