US President Donald Trump has confirmed a major airstrike on Iran’s Kharg Island, a critical military and oil export hub located near the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement on Truth Social, President Trump described the operation by US Central Command as one of the most significant airstrikes in Middle East history, claiming the total destruction of military targets on the island, which he referred to as Iran’s "crown jewel."
Kharg Island serves as the terminal for roughly 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports. While the facility remained largely untouched during the initial weeks of the conflict, this direct strike marks a pivot toward targeting Iran’s economic infrastructure.
Retired US Army Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told CNN that the operation represents a severe escalation. "We are now targeting Iran’s economic lifeblood," Kimmitt stated, suggesting the US is using the island’s infrastructure as leverage to ensure continued shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Experts warn that targeting such vital energy infrastructure could destabilize global markets. General Kimmitt cautioned that if Iran retaliates by targeting broader Middle Eastern energy assets, global oil prices could "spiral out of control."
