At least 16 people died and dozens were injured in two separate road accidents in Bangladesh's Sylhet and Bogura districts on Friday morning.

In Sylhet, a devastating head-on collision between two buses claimed nine lives, including a three-year-old child. The crash occurred around 7:00 am on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Osmaninagar’s Kashikapan area.

A Dhaka-bound Unique Paribahan bus collided with a Sylhet-bound Bengal Paribahan sleeper coach forcing the Unique bus into a roadside ditch. Seven passengers died instantly while two others including the toddler later succumbed to their injuries at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Police and fire service teams conducted the rescue operations.

Earlier in Bogura seven people were killed and at least 25 injured when a speeding bus ploughed into a group of day labourers. The accident happened around 5:30 am on the Bogura-Naogaon highway in the Erulia Silkibandha area of Sadar upazila. A Naogaon-bound bus traveling from Dhaka lost control, struck an electric pole and crashed into labourers waiting for daily work.

Victims were rushed to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. The tragic incident drew large crowds causing severe temporary traffic disruptions.

Authorities have sent all bodies to hospital morgues for autopsies and are working to identify the victims.
