The United States and Iran traded fresh military strikes into Sunday morning marking the eighth consecutive night of direct conflict. The escalation follows the collapse of an interim ceasefire last week intensifying fears of a full-scale war.
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) President Donald Trump ordered a new wave of airstrikes starting Saturday at 6:00 PM ET. The operation targeted Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities in southern Iran also areas near Sirik and Hajiabad in Hormozgan province as well as a location near Shadegan near the Iraqi border. CENTCOM stated the strikes aim to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and punish Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for a ballistic missile and drone assault in Jordan on Friday.
That Iranian attack killed two U.S. service members and left one missing, raising the U.S. death toll to 16 since the conflict began in late February.
Iranian state media (Mehr and Tasnim) reported no civilian casualties or infrastructure damage from the U.S. strikes. In retaliation Iranian army launched drone strikes targeting U.S. military assets at Kuwait’s Al-Adiri camp and Ali Al Salem Air Base early Sunday. Iran also reportedly targeted U.S. Gulf allies Saudi Arabia and Jordan following previous American strikes on Iranian infrastructure.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei issued a statement warning Washington of "heavier costs" declaring President Trump’s signature "utterly worthless." The White House has not yet responded.
The broader conflict began in late February when U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes to disable Iran's nuclear and missile programs causing severe global energy disruptions.
