Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will travel to Tehran on Monday leading an official delegation for talks on strengthening bilateral cooperation and regional peace with Iran's foreign ministry announced.

Foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the visit aims to reinforce Iran-Pakistan ties and continue Pakistan's mediating role in regional security efforts. Munir will meet senior Iranian officials during the trip.

Pakistan has served as a key mediator between Iran and the United States throughout the ongoing conflict also working alongside Qatar to help end the war that began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February.

Two Pakistani government sources confirmed the visit to Reuters, with one noting that Iran and Pakistan remain in direct contact. A second source said discussions would cover recent developments including US President Donald Trump's threat of tougher sanctions on Iran.

According to the source, Munir will discuss peace efforts under Islamabad's memorandum of understanding, Trump's sanctions warning and the situation following the Pakistan-Turkey-Saudi Arabia agreement along with Houthi-related concerns.

The visit comes amid escalating tensions, with Iran threatening a military response to planned US sanctions that could further strain its struggling economy. The trip coincides with a Monday announcement detailing what US officials have called the "toughest sanctions in history" against Iran.

Trump has warned of economic consequences for any country offering Iran a "lifeline" as Washington seeks to isolate Tehran. Oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remain largely halted with Iran threatening to strike unauthorized tankers attempting passage through the vital waterway.
