The holy month of Ramadan teaches Muslims the values of patience and gratitude.
Although food and drink are available during the day, fasting believers refrain from eating and drinking in obedience to the commands of Allah and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This act is considered one of the clearest examples of patience in Islam.
According to Hadith, fasting is closely connected with patience. One narration states that fasting represents half of patience, while another says patience is half of faith. These teachings highlight the deep relationship between patience and faith in a believer’s life.
Islamic scholar Imam Ghazali explained that patience can be divided into two types: physical patience and mental patience. Physical patience refers to enduring hardship or difficulty, including challenges faced during acts of worship. Mental patience involves controlling desires, avoiding wrongdoing and maintaining moral discipline.
Patience also appears in different forms in daily life. Enduring hardship during difficult times is known as patience; controlling desires is called piety; remaining calm in anger reflects tolerance; and standing firm in battle shows courage. Many virtues of faith are rooted in patience.
The Qur'an mentions patience in many verses and promises great rewards for those who remain patient. It says that patient believers will receive their reward without limit and that Allah is always with those who practice patience.
Along with patience, gratitude is another important quality of faith. The Qur’an encourages believers to remember and thank Allah for His countless blessings. It also promises that gratitude leads to an increase in blessings.
From the sky and rivers to the sun, moon and stars, nature reflects the blessings of Allah. Human life itself—from head to toe—is filled with His gifts. The Qur’an states that if people tried to count Allah’s blessings, they would never be able to finish.
Therefore, practicing patience in hardship and gratitude in times of ease helps believers maintain balance in life. These qualities bring peace in this world and hope for salvation in the hereafter.
