Authorities have finally initiated repairs on the dilapidated Amurkata-Chowrasta road in Paikgachha upazila after widespread media coverage highlighted the immense suffering of local residents. However, concerns regarding the quality and sustainability of the work continue to haunt the community.
The 7-kilometer road, stretching from Amurkata Bazar to the Soladana Union crossroads, serves as the primary transport route for thousands of villagers. For years, the road remained a hazardous stretch of deep potholes and broken bricks, making daily commutes to schools, hospitals, and markets a nightmare.
Local drivers, including van puller Abdul Karim and easybike driver Sohel Gazi, noted that while they are relieved to see activity, they fear a repeat of previous "temporary fixes" that failed within months. "We don't want more assurances; we want a road that lasts," Karim said.
The current renovation is being spearheaded by the local Union Parishad. Shekhar Ranjan Dhali, a member of Ward No. 3, clarified that because there is currently no major government budget allocated for a full reconstruction, the Union Parishad is using its own initiative to perform essential repairs.
While this brings immediate relief, residents argue that a 7-kilometer stretch of such economic importance requires a permanent, high-quality asphalt solution rather than patchwork. For now, the people of Paikgachha watch closely, hoping this "awakening" of the authorities leads to genuine, long-term development.
