Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met with Chinese Water Resources Minister Li Guoying in Beijing on Thursday, June 25. During their meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guest House, the two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation on managing Bangladesh's rivers, particularly the Teesta.
Prime Minister Rahman highlighted Bangladesh's ongoing river dredging efforts, which aim to reduce flood risks, protect the environment, and improve overall water management. He specifically requested Chinese technical assistance for the Teesta river project, alongside broader support for preventing riverbank erosion, upgrading irrigation systems, and enhancing inland navigation.
Minister Li responded positively, pledging full support for Bangladesh's water management initiatives. He noted that the partnership between the two nations is practical and research-based, referencing a 2005 Memorandum of Understanding and a recent visit by Chinese experts to Bangladesh. Additionally, Li invited Bangladeshi officials and water experts to receive training in China, allowing them to benefit directly from China's extensive water management experience.
The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and key senior advisors to the Prime Minister.
