Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela in quick succession, prompting the government to declare a nationwide state of emergency. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 7.5-magnitude tremor hit just 39 seconds after an initial 7.2-magnitude quake, triggering fears of massive casualties.

The USGS estimates a 44% chance of over 10,000 deaths and a 30% chance the toll could exceed 100,000. The agency also warned of severe hazards from widespread landslides and soil liquefaction.Acting President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed the suspension of all non-essential activities. Schools, metro lines, and rail services are closed, while the severely damaged Simon Bolivar International Airport in Maiquetia has grounded all flights. To bolster emergency response, the military has been deployed.

Search and rescue operations are being spearheaded by the commander general of the Bolivarian National Guard under urgent directives from the army's general staff.Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello assured the public that the government is rapidly accelerating aid distribution and rescue operations. Appealing for national unity, he urged citizens to remain cautious and check on one another—particularly children and the elderly—as the crisis unfolds.
