A major green initiative to plant 5,000 trees has kicked off in Dinajpur's Phulbari upazila Administration aiming to enhance the area's environmental health and aesthetic appeal.
Organized by the local non-governmental organization BASIC under the slogan "Let's plant flowers in Phulbari", the campaign will see the distribution and planting of 4,000 flower saplings and 1,000 fruit trees.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ahmed Hasan officially inaugurated the program on Wednesday morning by planting a sapling at Kunjaban Garden on the Upazila Parishad premises.
BASIC Executive Director Shyamal Chandra Sarkar outlined the scope of the project during the launch. He stated that the saplings will be planted in phases across the municipality and the upazila's seven unions. Target locations include educational institutions, railway stations, hospital grounds and roadsides.
"Trees are an indispensable part of human life. We hope everyone steps forward to make Phulbari more beautiful and green," Sarkar said.
Speaking at the event, UNO Ahmed Hasan emphasized the critical role of tree planting in the face of rising global temperatures.
"Trees are vital for maintaining the balance of our environment, supplying oxygen, and combating the severe impacts of climate change," Hasan explained. "At a time when the risk of natural disasters is increasing there is simply no alternative to planting trees."
He also urged residents to look beyond the initial planting phase. "It is not enough to just plant a sapling; we must take responsibility for its care. We hope initiatives like this motivate people to utilize vacant spaces around their own homes."
Organizers noted that beyond beautifying Phulbari, the core mission of the campaign is to raise public awareness about environmental conservation and sustainable community living.
