Police recovered the hanging body of 40-year-old imam Mohammad Amir Hossain from a mosque in Sitakunda, Chittagong, late Tuesday night (June 23).
The discovery was made around 11:00 PM at the Raja Mia Sawdagar Jame Mosque in the Banglabazar area of Sonaichhari union. Hossain, originally from Banshkhali upazila, had served as the mosque's imam for 13 years.
Mohammad Iftekhar Ahmed, General Secretary and Mutawalli of the mosque management committee, stated that Hossain led the Asr prayers but was unexpectedly absent for Maghrib and Isha.
"When he didn't appear for a long time, locals searched for him and found him hanging from a ceiling fan in his second-floor room," Ahmed said.
A handwritten note citing family disputes was found in the room. Prior to his death, Hossain also posted a Facebook status reading: "He who has nothing but sorrow in his life shows fear of suffering."
Sitakunda Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mohinul Islam confirmed that the body was recovered and sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police primarily suspect the imam died by suicide due to ongoing family disputes.
