Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi stated on Saturday that a structured legal process is currently underway regarding the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina though no specific timeline can be provided at this stage.
Speaking at a panel discussion titled "Power and Prudence: Managing Great Power Competition without Conflict" during the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026 in Dhaka, the High Commissioner addressed growing queries about Hasina's return.
"The spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly clarified India's position. There is an established, well-organized legal process currently ongoing, and courts are involved" Trivedi explained with noting that judicial involvement prevents setting a fixed timeframe.
Recalling the circumstances surrounding her arrival in India, the High Commissioner emphasized that India did not arrange her transport as she arrived on a Bangladeshi military aircraft during a rapidly unfolding crisis.
"India was not prepared for that sudden development. As a neighbor, India had to accept the ground reality at that moment" Trivedi remarked also adding that rejecting the aircraft or denying permission to land could have triggered even greater uncertainty.
Trivedi reaffirmed that all bilateral concerns can be addressed through constructive dialogue. He emphasized that just as Bangladesh values democracy and the rule of law and India similarly respects its own judicial process also allowing the legal procedures to run their course naturally.
