Shahibul Islam Pipul, a correspondent for Daily Jugantor and Bangla Tribune, was reportedly assaulted by the brother of a local BNP leader and his associates on Thursday evening.
The attack allegedly stemmed from a Facebook post made by the journalist regarding a previous incident involving his younger brother.
The Incident
According to the police complaint, the trouble began at 5:30 PM when Pipul’s younger brother, Yasin Ali Sami, was allegedly abducted and beaten by several Chhatra Dal activists. Upon learning of the situation, Pipul alerted the Bhangura Police, who successfully rescued Sami.
Pipul later posted about the ordeal on his personal Facebook profile. At approximately 6:30 PM, while Pipul was near the Bhangura municipal bus stand, he was confronted by a group of 15 to 20 people led by Md. Sharif Hossain, the younger brother of Bhangura Municipal BNP General Secretary Saidul Islam Buruj. The group reportedly verbally abused and physically assaulted the journalist over the social media post. Pipul escaped the scene and took shelter in a nearby shop.
Conflicting Statements
The victim claimed that a police officer present at the scene witnessed the assault and recorded video evidence.
However, the accused, Sharif Hossain, denied the assault. He claimed he only asked Pipul to delete a "mocking" post that referred to local youths as "Bedepara's lads." Sharif stated that while an argument occurred, no physical violence took place.
Bhangura Municipal BNP General Secretary Saidul Islam Buruj echoed his brother’s denial, stating that the incident was a verbal argument resulting from past friction between Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal supporters. "I do not tolerate injustice, but my brother was not involved in a fight," Buruj said, adding that he is working to resolve the matter through mediation.
Police Action
Bhangura Police Station OC Sakiul Azam confirmed receipt of the written complaint. "We are investigating the allegations and will take legal action accordingly," the OC stated.
