BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has called for a reduction in state power, arguing that concentrated authority paves the way for fascism.
Speaking as the chief guest at the founding anniversary of the Chattogram Dharma Ujjwal Parishad on Friday (January 16), Khasru emphasized that a strong citizenry is the only effective check against authoritarianism. The event was held at the Siemens Hostel on the National Maritime Academy premises.
Khasru noted that when state power grows indefinitely at the expense of the people, it creates a "worrisome situation" and stifles individual freedom. He stated that the BNP plans to ensure every citizen is empowered according to their constitutional rights.
For sustainable development, the BNP leader urged women to take leadership roles in all social and state sectors. "Equal participation of women is a prerequisite for real change," he added.
He stressed the importance of religious harmony and social unity, reminding the audience that every citizen—regardless of caste or creed—should feel equal and work independently.
Special guests at the program included Captain Ataur Rahman and Israfil Khasru, a member of the BNP's International Affairs Subcommittee.9 Other prominent figures present were: Former Councilor Sarfaraz Quader Russell and Rokonuddin Mahmud. Rubel Barua (Trustee, Buddhist Welfare Trust), Pritam Barua Dalim, Sunil Chakma, and several other representatives from the Chakma community.
The program concluded with a call for citizens to remain active in every field of society to ensure that the "hostage-like" political crises of the past are not repeated.
