A spell of heavy monsoon rain is approaching Bangladesh and is expected to remain active for up to 12 days starting June 18, according to the Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT).
In a social media update on Saturday (June 13), the observation group noted that this first major monsoon system of the year will likely intensify between June 18 and 19, with its effects lingering until June 30. Under its influence, heavy downpours are anticipated across most districts in the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Chittagong divisions.
Because this is a standard seasonal monsoon block, widespread severe storms and severe lightning are expected to be lower than pre-monsoon levels. However, isolated thunderstorms may still develop due to shifting wind patterns and typical gusty conditions.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) confirmed in its regular bulletin that a low-pressure area has extended over the northwest Bay of Bengal through Gangetic West Bengal. The monsoon remains fairly active over land across Bangladesh and is currently weak to moderate over the north Bay of Bengal.
Over the next 24 hours, the BMD forecasts light to moderate rain or thundershowers driven by temporary gusty winds across many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet, alongside scattered areas in Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Khulna. Heavy falls remain possible in isolated pockets. Daytime temperatures are expected to hold steady, while nighttime temperatures may dip slightly.
