Nutritionists say that when you eat breakfast matters as much as what you eat especially for controlling cholesterol. Experts now recommend having a balanced breakfast within two hours of waking up to protect heart health.

Eating soon after rising helps manage hunger and cuts the chance of unhealthy snacking or overeating later in the day. Studies show skipping breakfast is linked to higher levels of harmful LDL cholesterol. Nearly 25 million Americans have high cholesterol also a condition that narrows arteries and raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Dietitian Deborah Murphy said the general rule for breakfast timing and cholesterol is simple and the earlier is better. A cardiovascular nutrition specialist advises eating within two hours of waking to help keep cholesterol in check. While this window isn't strict it lowers the risk of skipping the meal altogether, which often leads to poor food choices later.

Research backs this up. A 2021 study of over 37,000 adults in China found breakfast-skippers had notably higher blood fats that total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol along with lower "good" HDL cholesterol. A 2023 analysis linked skipping breakfast to an average rise of nearly 10 mg/dL in LDL cholesterol.

Experts recommend a plant-based breakfast fruits of whole grains like oats, nuts and seeds rich in soluble fiber that helps trap cholesterol before it enters the bloodstream. Whole grains also provide B vitamins that support heart health. Sugary options like doughnuts and pastries should be avoided as they are typically high in saturated fat.

Along with diet the regular exercise plays a key role. Experts suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate activity such as brisk walking or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise like running each week to lower LDL and raise HDL cholesterol.
