The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) celebrated its 50th anniversary on August 4, marking a half-century of transforming the nation’s agricultural landscape. BARI Director General Dr. Md. Manjurul Quadir inaugurated the milestone event at the institution's headquarters, joined by scientists, officials and staff.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Quadir highlighted BARI’s pivotal role as the country’s largest multi-crop research institution. Tasked with researching 212 different crops, the institute operates with a clear mandate also ensuring national food and nutrition security, boosting farmers' incomes and generating employment.
Over the past five decades, BARI scientists have successfully developed 1,373 technological innovations. This impressive portfolio includes 681 high-yielding, disease-resistant crop varieties and 692 advanced production technologies. Together, these breakthroughs have drastically increased Bangladesh's domestic production of oilseeds, pulses, potatoes, vegetables, spices and fruits.
The event also reflected on the institute's historical roots. BARI was established as a fully autonomous body on August 4, 1976, through State Ordinance No. 62 by late President Ziaur Rahman. Granting independence to agricultural research created a vital environment for scientific innovation to flourish, laying a durable foundation for the country's long-term food security. Today, BARI's 50-year legacy continues to inspire a new generation of scientists and policymakers to build a world-class agricultural system.
The golden jubilee celebration was attended by senior BARI leadership, including Directors Dr. Reshma Sultana, Dr. Faruk Ahmed, Dr. Kawsar Uddin Ahmed, Dr. Nirmal Kumar Dutta, Dr. Habib Mohammad Naser and Dr. Md. Mosharraf Hossain Mollah, alongside researchers and workers from various departments.
