


The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has won the prestigious ISSCA Global Award 2026 for developing a highly resilient groundnut variety "BARI Chinabadam-9."
The award, recognizing excellence in the 'Crop Development and Production Technology' category was presented at the Dryland Congress 2026 in New Delhi. The event held from September 10 to 12 was jointly organized by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the Centre of Excellence for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture (ISSCA).
BARI Chinabadam-9 stood out among competitive nominations from across developing nations. The locally developed groundnut is capable of withstanding severe environmental conditions with directly empowering smallholder farmers in dryland regions. It has been widely praised for boosting productivity, strengthening food security and enhancing climate resilience.
"This award symbolizes the excellence of our research," said Dr. Md. Manjurul Kadir, Director General of BARI. "BARI Chinabadam-9 proves that agricultural research tailored to local needs can transform productivity in vulnerable regions. We remain committed to developing innovative technologies to ensure our farmers' food security."
The ISSCA Global Awards celebrate proven agricultural innovations with the potential for widespread adoption in other countries. This recognition highlights Bangladesh's growing leadership in sharing viable and science-based agricultural solutions across the Global South.
As Bangladesh's largest multi-crop research institution the BARI conducts ongoing research on over 212 crop types including pulses, oilseeds and vegetables. The institute continuously works to develop high-yielding also sustainable technologies to secure the nation's nutritional future.
