Bangladesh is observing "July Mass Uprising Day" today, marking the second anniversary of the historic student-led movement that ousted the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5, 2024. Across the country, citizens, political parties and socio-cultural organizations are honoring the sacrifices of those who ended over a decade of autocratic rule.
In separate messages, Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid profound tribute to the martyrs and injured fighters.
The Acting President remembered victims such as Abu Sayed, Mugdha, Wasim, and child Riya Gop, describing the uprising as an "irresistible manifestation of accumulated public anger against misrule." He urged citizens to unite, stating, "Let us all inspired by the spirit of the great July Mass Uprising remain united in building a democratic, justice-based, humane and discrimination-free new Bangladesh."
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called August 5 a day of victory and the restoration of democratic rights. He recalled the 15-year struggle against fascism also highlighting the severe suppression of opposition voices also enforced disappearances through secret prisons known as "Aynaghar" and the systematic dismantling of state institutions.
The Premier condemned the previous regime for opening fire on unarmed civilians including firing from helicopters to crush the 2024 protests. "Bangladesh owes an enduring debt to every martyr's family. Now it is our turn to repay that debt" he said, pledging to build a just self-reliant and humane nation.
Nationwide Commemorations
To mark the historic occasion, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum today. Later, Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will attend a special reception for the families of the martyrs and injured fighters at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
Throughout the day, the public will participate in memorial processions, discussions and cultural performances. Major streets, traffic islands and July memorials have been adorned with national flags and illuminated.
State broadcasters are airing special commemorative programs, while educational institutions host essay and drawing competitions. Across the country, special prayers are being held in religious institutions. To ensure public engagement, all government and autonomous museums are offering free entry today and special meals are being served at state-run hospitals, prisons, orphanages and shelters.
