The newly released Spider-Man Brand New Day has dethroned Christopher Nolan’s historical epic The Odyssey at the global box office. In just three days the latest superhero installment earned $355 million in North America overtaking the $330 million The Odyssey accumulated over 13 days.
Produced on a $225 million budget the new Spider-Man film has already amassed a staggering $927 million worldwide. Its domestic debut marks the second-largest opening weekend in cinema history bolstered by a $168 million opening day that included $72 million from Thursday night previews.
Despite losing the number-one spot Nolan’s The Odyssey—an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem—remains a massive financial success. The film achieved its $330 million domestic milestone in under two weeks a notably faster pace than Nolan’s previous blockbuster Oppenheimer. Globally The Odyssey has grossed $911 million after three weeks in theaters and is rapidly approaching the coveted $1 billion threshold.
While Spider-Man has claimed the immediate domestic lead both films are driving massive global revenue proving the box office power of both franchise superhero films and prestige auteur cinema.
