A coordinated burglary at a residential building in Jhalakathi’s Nalchiti Municipality has left locals on edge after thieves looted cash and gold from two flats on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at "Swarna Villa" on High School Road. According to police and local sources, both families had locked their second-floor apartments to run family errands.

Seizing this brief window, a gang of thieves broke the padlocks to enter the flats. They looted 80,000 BDT in cash and approximately two bhoris of gold ornaments from the residence of expatriate Jamal Hossain. From the adjacent flat, belonging to school teacher Maksuda Begum, the thieves stole an additional 10,000 BDT.

The families discovered the break-in upon returning home, finding their front doors breached and household items ransacked. They immediately notified the authorities.

Upon inspecting the scene, police discovered a continuous trail of blood leading from inside the apartments to the main road outside the building. Investigators suspect one of the perpetrators sustained a severe cut while breaking the locks or prying open the steel cupboards.

Nalchiti Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhiduzzaman Sohag confirmed the ongoing investigation. “We have collected crucial evidence from the scene. The blood trail is a vital clue,” the OC stated. “We are currently collecting and analyzing CCTV footage from the surrounding area. A coordinated effort is underway to identify the culprits and bring them to justice swiftly.”

Residents are worried and panicked after two flats in the same building were robbed on the same night. Locals have demanded increased night patrols in the city and the arrest of the gang of thieves.
